  BOTANICAL CLASSIFICATION »

The Ka'a He'ê is a phanerogamic plant, dicotyledonous, and belongs to the campanile order of the compositae family and was first classified in 1899 by the Swiss Botanist Moisés S. Bertoni who, starting off from a small deficient and incomplete flowering sample, completed the first systematic study of the plant denominated as "Empatorium Rebaudianum Bert."(1)

This name was given in homage to the Paraguayan chemist Ovidio Rebaudi who had undertaken the first chemical analysis in 1905 from a live plant that had bloomed. Bertoni later undertook a revision of his first studies and realised that it was an Eupatorium plant, but of the Stevia gender, and published it as such (2). Since then it is known with the name of Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni.
